On Wednesday, August 12, the Second Wednesday House Party at Bagaduce Music East-meets-Appalachia with Aditi Sethi and Jay Brown

Traveling from Asheville, NC, Aditi and Jay have been playing music together since the day they met, in December of 2003. It began with Christmas songs on harp and guitar, and then later ancient sacred Indian songs with extended improvisations, old American folk songs with 2-part harmonies, original duets, spontaneous creations.

Aditi had begun her musical journey with her father, accompanying him on the harmonium and singing with him the ancient devotional songs he had learned from his father, as well as ghazals and Bollywood songs from his youth. Jay’s musical beginnings were with his father as well, who taught him guitar at age 6, and introduced him to songwriting. Along with Jay’s mom they performed together in several family bands. Jay went on to form the band Lazybirds, a classic American roots band that once performed with Doc Watson, and it was through this band that Jay became immersed in the timeless classics of blues, jazz, ragtime, country, and rock n roll.

Jay had long been fascinated with the Indian approach to musical improvisation when he met Aditi, and from the first notes they played together there was a lovely ease and a natural resonance. Together they formed the world music group Shantavaani, and later with their friends Angie and Cas they formed the original folk group the Appalucians. In the meantime they both worked in Hospice, they had 3 energetic children (all in the family band) and Aditi started the non-profit Center for Conscious Living and Dying. They share a musical soul family in and around Asheville, with Scott Sheerin, Jahidi, Joel Karabo, and Greg Lathrop to name a few. Aditi leads Kirtans, Jay performs as a one-man-band, Aditi does Tedx talks, Jay plays ragtime piano for silent films, and when the stars line up, they come together as Aditi and Jay.

Soups, snacks, and chai will be available from 6:00–7:15 PM from Conscious Café. A Native Gardens of Blue Hill docent will be available to answer questions in their gardens and trails right here on the Bagaduce Music Campus!

Concert admission: Advanced tickets encouraged. $15–35 suggested. Tickets at the door as capacity allows.
